How to check your App Store ranking by country

Your app has a different rank for the same keyword in every App Store country. Here is how to check it per storefront, how to track it over time and how to read the numbers.

Updated

Why your rank differs by country

Every country has its own App Store with its own apps, ratings and language. Ranking is based on text relevance and on user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews (Apple), and both differ per country. You can be #3 for “habit tracker” in the U.S. and invisible in Germany, where people search in German anyway.

Checking it by hand

The App Store on your iPhone only shows the store of your Apple Account’s country. Switching countries means changing the account region, which needs a payment method for the new country. That is fine for one check and useless for daily tracking in 20 countries.

Checking it with Apple's public search data

Apple offers a public search endpoint for its stores, documented as the iTunes Search API. A request like this returns up to 200 apps for a term in one country:

https://itunes.apple.com/search?term=habit%20tracker&country=de&entity=software&limit=200

Your rank is the position of your app in that list. If it is not in the 200 results, the rank is “200+”.

Two caveats:

  • The order is close to what the App Store shows, but a specific iPhone can show a slightly different list. Search ads are not part of it.
  • Apple limits the endpoint to roughly 20 requests per minute, so checking many keywords in many countries needs a queue and a cache.

Tracking it over time

  • Check the same keywords in the same countries once a day. More often adds noise, not insight.
  • Look at the trend over one or two weeks, especially after a release.
  • Watch which apps rank right above you. They are the ones you need to beat.

Reading the result

  • Top 3: you are what people see first.
  • 4 to 10: visible without much scrolling; the best place to push.
  • 11 to 50: you rank, but few people scroll that far.
  • 200+: not found in the first 200 results.
