Quick answer
Spaces After Commas in App Store Keywords
Do not put spaces after commas in the App Store keyword field. Apple says terms are separated by commas with no spaces, and spaces may be used to separate words within a single keyword phrase.
Updated
Apple's example
Apple's example is Property,House,Real Estate. The comma separates three terms. The space in "Real Estate" belongs to one phrase.
What the spaces cost
The field accepts up to 100 bytes, so every space uses part of that budget.
| List | Bytes |
|---|---|
| habit,tracker,streak,routine | 28 |
| habit, tracker, streak, routine | 31 |
Three extra spaces cost three bytes for no benefit. Across a full list of 15 terms, the waste reaches 14 bytes, enough for another short keyword. This is why the format rule matters even though it looks cosmetic. For the unit itself, read bytes or characters.
Other ways to waste space
Apple advises avoiding plurals of words you already include, generic terms like "app" or "game", filler words like "the" and "to", and special characters such as # or @ unless part of the brand identity. Special characters do not carry extra weight in search.
Common mistakes
- Using spaces as separators instead of commas.
- Writing "habit tracker" when you meant two separate keywords. Apple does not document how it combines words, so test with your own rank checks.
- Leaving terms shorter than the minimum length.
Next step
Let the keyword field packer format the list and show the byte count, then follow the keyword field guide for choosing terms. Remember that competitor names are not allowed.
Questions
- Do I need a space after the comma?
- No. Apple's example is Property,House,Real Estate: commas without spaces.
- What about a trailing comma?
- Apple does not document it. A trailing comma only uses a byte, so leave it off.
