Byte limit (App Store keyword field)
The byte limit is the cap on the keyword field: 100 bytes. The App Store Connect field reference states bytes, not characters. Apple's marketing pages describe the same limit as "100 characters total", so use the reference as your measure.

Bytes in each script
A byte is the unit of storage. In UTF-8 the number of bytes per character depends on the script:
| Text | Characters | Bytes |
|---|---|---|
| café | 4 | 5 |
| Gewohnheiten | 12 | 12 |
| привычки | 8 | 16 |
| 習慣化 | 3 | 9 |
Plain English letters, digits and commas cost one byte each. Accented Latin letters usually cost two, Cyrillic two per letter and Japanese typically three per character. See UTF-8.
What it means for each language
A field of 100 bytes holds about 100 English letters, but only about 50 Cyrillic letters or about 33 Japanese characters including commas. A Japanese keyword list therefore holds roughly a third as many characters as an English one. This is why keyword localization must pack each language separately.
Other rules inside the budget
- Separate terms with commas and no spaces. Each comma costs a byte.
- Each keyword must be longer than two characters.
- App Review Notes also count in bytes, up to 4000.
Example
A hypothetical Japanese habit app lists 習慣化,タスク管理,目標設定 (14 characters). The count is 38 bytes, leaving 62 bytes for more terms.
Common mistakes
- Using a character counter on the keyword field.
- Adding spaces after commas.
