App Store Keywords for Medical Apps: Thin Demand Outside the US
Medical is a category where the English phrases only register in one storefront. Measured on 2026-11-01 via Apple's iTunes Search API, six Medical phrases averaged an estimated volume of 16.0 and a difficulty of 6.5 (both 25th of 26), with a median of 29 ratings per top-10 app. In the US the Medical rows averaged volume 35.7 and difficulty 25.3; in Japan 8.3 and 0.2. All scores are estimates from rating counts, not Apple search counts.

| Phrase | US | GB | DE | JP | FR | BR | Mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| symptom checker | 25 / 5 | 19 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 9.3 / 0.8 |
| medication reminder | 50 / 30 | 35 / 19 | 35 / 15 | 14 / 0 | 18 / 0 | 35 / 12 | 31.2 / 12.7 |
| anatomy | 47 / 26 | 23 / 6 | 25 / 9 | 24 / 1 | 22 / 5 | 31 / 11 | 28.7 / 9.7 |
| glucose tracker | 50 / 36 | 15 / 1 | 15 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 14.8 / 6.2 |
| telemedicine | 39 / 55 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 3 | 3 / 0 | 9.0 / 9.7 |
| first aid | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 2 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 3 / 0 | 2.8 / 0.0 |
Two rows deserve a second look. "Telemedicine" scores 39 / 55 in the US, with difficulty above volume, and 3 or 0 elsewhere: one storefront has apps with large rating counts; the others return little. "First aid" is the opposite extreme, a flat 3 / 0 (2 in Germany) across the grid, which is the signature of a query that returns few apps. Neither row says that a first-aid app would be easy to find; they say that the English phrase finds almost nothing in the data.
Medical in the 26-category context
| Measure | Medical | 26-category median |
|---|---|---|
| Median rating count, top-10 apps | 29 | about 2,690 |
| Top-10 apps with 50,000 or more ratings | 3% | 19.5% |
| Names containing every query word | 46% | 43.5% |
| Names with a separator | 35% | 53% |
| Mean app name length (characters) | 23.1 | 23.5 |
| Mean volume / mean difficulty | 16.0 / 6.5 | 44.5 / 30.3 |
| US results with Medical as primary genre | 71.7% | 68.6% (US, all categories) |
Medical's pooled median of 29 ratings is mostly the effect of the smaller storefronts. By storefront it ranges from about 2,510 in the US to 71 in Great Britain, 29.5 in Germany and 4 in Japan. The genre match (71.7%) is close to the study average, and 23.3% of the US results were Health & Fitness apps. Several phrases ("medication reminder", "glucose tracker") are used for personal tracking as well as clinical care, and the category assignment an app chooses is its own decision. The phrase-to-category mapping is approximate across the study.
What to take from this
- Zero is not an opening. Difficulty of 0 with volume of 3 appears in the data for queries that return very few apps. The guide on spotting dead keywords explains how to separate a quiet niche from a phrase nobody types.
- Look for the local phrase. Four of the six phrases are at or below 3 volume in Japan, France or Brazil. Those storefronts need their own vocabulary, which our English test did not cover; see translate or transcreate keywords.
- Pick the category on the facts. Apple's Guideline 2.3.5 requires the most appropriate category, and Apple may change it if it is far off. A wellness tracker belongs with Health & Fitness, and a lookup tool for clinical facts may sit closer to Reference. Metadata keywords cannot fix a category that does not fit the app.
- Study products have a twin. Anatomy and first-aid learning content competes with Education apps for the same learners.
