App Store Keywords for Sports Apps: Sport-Specific Terms Travel Badly
Sports keywords are the most local we measured: the specific sport decides the market. Measured on 2026-11-01 via Apple's iTunes Search API, "fantasy football" scored 82 volume and 71 difficulty in the US but 16 and 0 in Japan, while "basketball" held between 44 and 83 volume in all six storefronts. The category as a whole averaged difficulty 28.6 (16th of 26) and a median of 3,018.5 ratings per top-10 app. All scores are estimates from rating counts, not Apple search counts.

Six Sports phrases
Estimated volume / estimated difficulty on a 0-100 scale. The phrases are English in every storefront.
| Phrase | US | GB | DE | JP | FR | BR | Mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| live scores | 72 / 72 | 66 / 58 | 60 / 48 | 39 / 21 | 51 / 33 | 53 / 35 | 56.8 / 44.5 |
| golf gps | 74 / 58 | 53 / 28 | 31 / 8 | 36 / 19 | 29 / 11 | 7 / 0 | 38.3 / 20.7 |
| cycling | 68 / 49 | 61 / 41 | 49 / 36 | 45 / 26 | 38 / 23 | 27 / 6 | 48.0 / 30.2 |
| fantasy football | 82 / 71 | 54 / 30 | 45 / 26 | 16 / 0 | 41 / 25 | 10 / 0 | 41.3 / 25.3 |
| ski tracker | 42 / 19 | 32 / 13 | 40 / 22 | 3 / 0 | 30 / 11 | 3 / 0 | 25.0 / 10.8 |
| basketball | 83 / 77 | 52 / 35 | 56 / 34 | 55 / 30 | 59 / 42 | 44 / 24 | 58.2 / 40.3 |
There are two kinds of rows. Global sports ("basketball", "cycling", "live scores") keep a volume above 38 in nearly every storefront. Regional or seasonal activities ("fantasy football", "golf gps", "ski tracker") fall to 3 to 16 in one or more storefronts. That is useful for deciding what to localise first, and it is a warning against averaging: the mean of "ski tracker" (25.0 volume) describes no real storefront. The mean difficulty of 10.8 hides a US value of 19 and a Brazilian value of 0.
Sports against the median category
| Measure | Sports | 26-category median |
|---|---|---|
| Median rating count, top-10 apps | 3,018.5 | about 2,690 |
| Top-10 apps with 50,000 or more ratings | 15% | 19.5% |
| Names containing every query word | 44% | 43.5% |
| Names of 25 to 30 characters | 66% | 58.5% |
| Mean app name length (characters) | 24.1 | 23.5 |
| Mean volume / mean difficulty | 44.6 / 28.6 | 44.5 / 30.3 |
| US results with Sports as primary genre | 58.3% | 68.6% (US, all categories) |
Sports sits at the median for volume and exact-title share, while US median ratings (about 38,400) are more than 200 times Brazil's (187). The genre match is on the low side: 58.3% of US results were Sports apps, 18.3% were Games and 13.3% were Health & Fitness. Fantasy and trivia-style phrases pull in Games, and activity tracking pulls in Health & Fitness. The study's phrase-to-category mapping is approximate; read these shares as the competitive set for the phrase, not as a ruling on where an app belongs.
How to use it
- Choose the first market from the sport. If your app serves a regional sport, a low English score in another storefront is expected, not a failure. Localizing a listing without translating the app shows how to work one storefront at a time.
- Expect a season. Sports interest peaks with leagues and tournaments. A single-day number cannot capture that, so read seasonal App Store keywords before you commit bytes to a time-bound term.
- Do not chase the scoreboard head term. "Live scores" has a difficulty of 72 in the US and 58 in Great Britain. A smaller app is more likely to be found for one team, league or activity described precisely, though only a test in your market can show it.
- Check the news side. Result and match-report apps may be compared with News apps, whose own numbers show how heavily the US dominates.
How we measured
Six generic English phrases per category were queried through the iTunes Search API (entity=software, limit=25) in the US, GB, DE, JP, FR and BR, with the top 10 results per query analysed: 36 queries and 360 slots for Sports, fetched 2026-11-01. The method is in the research methodology, the research hub and how we measure. Data: category CSV.
