Seasonal App Store Keywords: A Calendar and Change Plan

Plan seasonal keywords like a release: decide the season, change the fields that need a new version early, use fields with their own cadence for the peak, and schedule the switch back. Apple documents which fields can change without an app update (promotional text) and which are tied to a version (description and subtitle), and says changes may take up to 24 hours to appear. Allow extra time for App Review.

Updated

Which fields can carry a seasonal change

SpeedFieldWhat Apple documents
Any timePromotional textCan be updated without a new version, but does not affect search
With a versionSubtitle, description; plan keywords the same wayApple ties the subtitle and description to a new version. Apple's pages say nothing about keywords changing without one, so plan them with a version
Separate cadenceCustom product pagesOwn screenshots, promotional text and keywords; must be approved by App Review; metadata can be submitted independent of an app update
Time-boxedIn-App EventsLast up to 31 days, can be published 14 days before they start, and appear in search results

Because promotional text is not searchable, use it to speak to the season for people who are already on your page. Search needs the keyword field, name or subtitle, or a custom product page with keywords assigned.

Steps

  1. List your seasons. Holidays, school terms, new-year resolutions, sports seasons, tax time: any date when demand for your category moves. Use your own history, not a rule of thumb.
  2. Estimate the lead time. Count back from the peak: the time to write, the time for a version to pass App Review, and one day for propagation.
  3. Choose the vehicle. A seasonal term in the keyword field costs bytes you must give up elsewhere; a custom product page with its own keywords does not touch the default field. See custom product pages for search keywords.
  4. Pick what to remove. If a seasonal term replaces another in the 100-byte field, list the term you drop and when it returns.
  5. Write the season for the page. Promotional text, an In-App Event, and screenshots on a custom page can carry the theme.
  6. Schedule the switch back. Put the date in the same calendar as the launch.
  7. Measure. Compare rank and downloads in the weeks before, during and after. Season and change are mixed together in the data, so keep a log.

Worked example

A hypothetical habit tracker, Streakly, expects demand to rise around the new year and wants to be visible for "resolution" terms by December 26.

DateAction
Nov 15Choose seasonal terms; decide to drop "daily" from the keyword field
Nov 20Build a custom product page with new-year screenshots; assign its keywords
Nov 25Submit the custom page and the version for review
Dec 10Latest date to have approvals, leaving a buffer
Dec 12Publish an In-App Event (up to 14 days ahead) for a January challenge
Dec 26Update promotional text with the offer; allow 24 hours to appear
Jan 31Switch promotional text back; in the next version restore the dropped term

The dates are an example; App Review time is not fixed. Streakly's own history from the past year decides how early to start.

What about volume numbers?

Most keyword numbers describe a typical state, not a season. LocalASO's volume and difficulty are 0 to 100 estimates derived from the rating counts of the apps ranking for a keyword, and its docs say the numbers ignore seasonality. So a seasonal term can show low volume in an off-season check. Use your own rank and download history to decide.

Risks

  • Changing the keyword field only for a short season can lose rank on a term you drop.
  • A custom page that does not match the season it advertises converts poorly.
  • Missing the review window; submit early.

Next step

Build your seasonal terms with the keyword research guide and fit them into the 100-byte field. LocalASO tracks rank per keyword in 52 storefronts, so you can compare before and after; see the keyword research docs.
