How to Find Quick Win Keywords for Your App

A quick win keyword is a phrase where you already rank near the top, between about 4 and 20, with real demand and a top 10 you can beat. It costs the least to improve because your app already matches it. Find it by filtering your tracked keywords on rank, volume and difficulty, then strengthen the match.

Updated

The filter

In LocalASO, Push means: you rank 4 to 20, volume is solid and difficulty is below 80. Use the same filter by hand or in a spreadsheet:

  1. Rank between 4 and 20 in the country.
  2. Estimated demand above the low end of your list.
  3. Difficulty below the hard range. Estimates come from rating counts of the top 10, not from Apple. See keyword difficulty.
  4. Relevant to your app. A relevant phrase at rank 12 beats an irrelevant one at rank 3.

Exclude phrases you rank for only by accident, such as a word in a feature name nobody searches. The quick win keyword glossary entry gives the short definition.

Two of five qualify. Do not push a keyword just because it is close if few people search it.

Ways to push a quick win

Apple names text relevance and user behavior as search factors (Apple: App Store search). Your levers follow from those two:

  • Text: make sure the exact phrase is in the name, subtitle or keyword field. If it is only in the keyword field, move it to the subtitle. Strengthen the match before spending on anything else.
  • Behavior: better ratings and a stronger product page help downloads; see conversion.
  • Do not disturb: do not change other fields in the same release, or you cannot tell what worked.

Apple does not say how much each lever moves a rank. Treat the result as an experiment.

Verify

  1. Record the baseline rank and a control keyword.
  2. Make one change and note the date.
  3. Apple says updated app information may take up to 24 hours to appear (Apple). Read ranks daily for two weeks.
  4. If the rank crosses into the top 10, keep the change. If not, try the next lever.

See tracking rankings and prioritizing keywords.

Quick wins run out

After you take the first few, new ones come from new candidates or new countries. Check the same phrases in other storefronts; a phrase that is hard in the US may be a quick win in another market. See ranking by country.

Do not over-read a single check

A rank of 12 today can be 9 tomorrow without any action from you, so confirm a quick win over several days before you change anything. Look at the trend in your rank log, not at one reading. A phrase that is stable between 10 and 15 for a week is a better target than one that jumped to 12 once.

Questions

What rank counts as a quick win?
LocalASO's Push verdict uses rank 4 to 20 with solid volume and difficulty below 80. That is a working rule from one tool, not an Apple definition.
