Why Did My App Store Ranking Drop? A Diagnostic Checklist

Your ranking most often drops because of something you changed, a shift in your ratings, a competitor that moved ahead or a seasonal change in what people search. Check them in that order, from the cheapest to rule out to the hardest, and look at the pattern first: one keyword, many keywords or one country.

Updated

First, read the pattern

Step 1: Check your change log

Did you edit the name, subtitle or keyword field? Apple says updated app information may take up to 24 hours to appear (Apple: view and edit app information). Compare the date of the drop with your edit. If a word left your metadata, the phrase loses text relevance for it. This is the first thing to check, and the only cause you can reverse at once.

Step 2: Check your ratings

Apple lists user behavior, including downloads, ratings and reviews, next to text relevance as a search factor (Apple: App Store search), and says ratings and reviews can influence rank. Look for a drop in your average rating or a burst of low reviews in the same week. If you released a version and chose to reset the rating, the overview rating starts again; Apple states it affects all storefronts at once (see the ratings reset answer).

Step 3: Check your downloads and conversion

Apple does not publish ranking weights. If downloads from search fell because your icon or screenshots changed, a lower conversion could follow. Look at the same period in App Analytics; the measuring guide explains which numbers to use.

Step 4: Look at who moved ahead

Search the keyword and compare the top 10 with your last reading. A new app with many ratings, or a competitor that rewrote its subtitle, can push you down without any change on your side. The competitor keyword guide shows how to read it.

Step 5: Consider the season

Some phrases follow the calendar: fitness in January, tax in spring. A seasonal drop returns on its own. Look at the same weeks in earlier years if you have the data, or check whether competitors dropped too.

Step 6: Check your metadata for risky words

Apple may modify inappropriate keywords at any time or take other steps to prevent abuse (Guideline 2.3.7). If your field contains competitor names, trademarks or irrelevant terms, remove them. See avoiding keyword stuffing rejection.

Step 7: Check one country at a time

Users can search with localized keywords in all countries where the localization shows (Apple: localization). If one country fell, check its localized keyword field and its local competitors before you touch anything else.

What Apple does not say

Apple does not publish ranking weights, a list of causes or a way to see why a position changed. Anything beyond the checks above is a guess. If none of the steps explains the drop, keep the daily record and wait: small daily moves are normal.

In LocalASO

LocalASO keeps a daily rank chart for every keyword and country, and lists the apps ranking ahead of yours with their review counts, which is the data for steps 1, 4 and 7. Ranks come from public search results. See the keyword research docs and how to track rankings.

Questions

Can Apple change my keywords without telling me?
Guideline 2.3.7 says Apple may modify inappropriate keywords at any time or take other steps to prevent abuse. If your field contains competitor names or trademarks, review it.
