Polish App Store Localization: Storefronts and Keyword Bytes
Polish appears in one row of Apple's localizations table: Poland, where English (U.K.) is the default and Polish is the only additional language. It is never a default, so a Polish listing is something you add to an English base.
Updated
A Polish listing is an addition to English
The Poland row lists English (U.K.) first, then Polish. If you ship only an English listing, a shopper in Poland gets the primary language or the nearest localization. Adding the pl locale gives that storefront its own name, subtitle, keywords and description. The Poland keyword page shows the local competition.
Poland is a typical shape for central Europe in this table: one storefront, one local language, English as default. Czech and Croatian follow the same pattern with different neighbors.
Polish storefronts in Apple's table
- Default language in none: Apple's table never makes Polish the default.
- Additional language in 1: Poland.
Where Polish is an additional language, the default beside it is English (U.K.).
Polish keywords and the 100-byte limit
Apple's keyword reference allows 100 bytes, not 100 characters. Counted as UTF-8, the example below contains 59 one-byte characters (separators excluded). Every letter costs one byte, so the field holds up to 100 characters, commas included. The words below are a hypothetical keyword list for a habit tracker called Streakly; they are illustrations, not validated search terms, and each has at least three characters.
| Keyword | Meaning | Characters | Bytes |
|---|---|---|---|
| nawyki | habits | 6 | 6 |
| rutyna | routine | 6 | 6 |
| cele | goals | 4 | 4 |
| przypomnienia | reminders | 13 | 13 |
| motywacja | motivation | 9 | 9 |
| planer dnia | day planner | 11 | 11 |
| dyscyplina | discipline | 10 | 10 |
Joined with commas and no spaces after them, the field is:
nawyki,rutyna,cele,przypomnienia,motywacja,planer dnia,dyscyplina
That is 65 characters and 65 bytes: 59 bytes of keywords plus 6 commas, leaving 35 of the 100 bytes free. The byte counts assume UTF-8; confirm the final count in App Store Connect before you save.
Nine special letters, one byte more each
Polish adds nine letters to the Latin alphabet: ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź and ż. Each takes two bytes. In the example field, most keywords contain none of them and stay at one byte per letter, so the penalty depends on the word you choose.
Apple does not document whether searching without the Polish letters matches keywords that have them. That is a common reason to test both a diacritic and a plain form before spending bytes on both. Use the same rules as elsewhere: keywords longer than two characters, commas with no spaces after them.
What to do next
LocalASO checks keywords in 52 App Store storefronts, each in the storefront's local language, so you can compare your Polish candidates with the English ones in one place. Keywords, ranks and listings stay in a database on your Mac. LocalASO is a one-time $29 purchase and the app needs a license key to run; the setup is in the localization docs and the price is on the pricing page. To test the field you just built, use the keyword field checker, or browse every language page. See also: Czech, Croatian, English (U.K.).
