Portuguese (Brazil) App Store Localization: Storefronts and Keyword Bytes
Portuguese (Brazil) is the default language of Brazil in Apple's localizations table, where English (U.K.) is the additional language. It is also one of the nine extra languages listed for the United States. Portugal has its own Portuguese (Portugal) row.
Updated
pt-BR and pt-PT are different locales
Apple's list of metadata languages includes both Portuguese (Brazil), code pt-BR, and Portuguese (Portugal), code pt-PT. The table gives the Portugal storefront a Portuguese (Portugal) default, so a Brazilian keyword list is not a Portugal list. Copying one into the other is a decision you should make deliberately; the Portugal keyword page shows what is ranking there.
In the table, pt-BR serves two rows: Brazil as the default and the United States as an extra. The 100-byte budget for pt-BR is therefore about Brazil first, and about a U.S. Portuguese listing second.
Portuguese (Brazil) storefronts in Apple's table
- Default language in 1: Brazil.
- Additional language in 1: United States.
Every default storefront also lists another language (English (U.K.)), so Portuguese (Brazil) is never the only localization there.
Where Portuguese (Brazil) is an additional language, the default beside it is English (US).
A worked Portuguese (Brazil) keyword field
Apple's keyword reference allows 100 bytes, not 100 characters. Counted as UTF-8, the example below contains 55 one-byte and 3 two-byte characters (separators excluded). Only the accented letters cost two bytes, so the field holds between 50 and 100 letters depending on how many accents you use. The words below are a hypothetical keyword list for a habit tracker called Streakly; they are illustrations, not validated search terms, and each has at least three characters.
| Keyword | Meaning | Characters | Bytes |
|---|---|---|---|
| hábitos | habits | 7 | 8 |
| rotina | routine | 6 | 6 |
| metas | goals | 5 | 5 |
| lembrete | reminder | 8 | 8 |
| motivação | motivation | 9 | 11 |
| produtividade | productivity | 13 | 13 |
| disciplina | discipline | 10 | 10 |
Joined with commas and no spaces after them, the field is:
hábitos,rotina,metas,lembrete,motivação,produtividade,disciplina
That is 64 characters and 67 bytes: 61 bytes of keywords plus 6 commas, leaving 33 of the 100 bytes free. The byte counts assume UTF-8; confirm the final count in App Store Connect before you save.
Brazil and the U.S. row
The United States lists Portuguese (Brazil) among nine additional languages, together with Spanish (Mexico), French and others. If you want the U.S. storefront to carry a Portuguese listing, the one to use is pt-BR, not pt-PT.
Accented letters such as ã, ç and é take two bytes. The tilde in ã and õ is part of the letter, so dropping accents saves bytes but changes the word; Apple does not document how accents affect matching. Test both forms in the Brazil storefront before removing them.
Check it in LocalASO
LocalASO checks keywords in 52 App Store storefronts, each in the storefront's local language, so you can compare your Portuguese (Brazil) candidates with the English ones in one place. Keywords, ranks and listings stay in a database on your Mac. LocalASO is a one-time $29 purchase and the app needs a license key to run; the setup is in the localization docs and the price is on the pricing page. To test the field you just built, use the keyword field checker, or browse every language page. See also: Spanish (Mexico), English (U.S.), Spanish (Spain).
