Quick answer
How Many Languages Does the App Store Support?
App Store Connect supports 50 metadata languages and locales. Apple's locale shortcode article says the App Store is available in 175 regions and 50 languages.

What counts as a language
The 50 include variants: English appears as Australia, Canada, U.K. and U.S.; Spanish as Mexico and Spain; Portuguese as Brazil and Portugal; French as France and Canada; and Chinese as Simplified and Traditional. Others include Arabic, Bangla, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Greek and Hebrew. Locale codes follow the App Store Connect API shortcodes, such as en-US and ja; the locale code reference lists them all.
How fallback works
You do not need all 50. If no localization matches a user's language, the next most relevant localization is used, and in other countries the primary language is shown. The primary language is the default for metadata when localized metadata is missing for a country or region, and you can change it at any time subject to prerequisites.
What a new language copies
When you add a language, screenshots and properties default to the primary language's, except description and keywords. So a new locale starts with your English images but empty description and keywords, which you must write. Languages can be managed only when the app status is editable.
Worked example
A hypothetical English-only app adds Japanese. The result is two localizations, en-US and ja, with the Japanese one reusing the English screenshots until you replace them. Japanese needs its own keywords, within the 100-byte limit that holds fewer characters.
Next step
See which languages each country shows in the App Store localizations table, and compare with the number of countries. Plan the work with the localization guide.
