App Store tags (search results)
App Store tags are labels that may appear in search results for an app. Apple states that search results may include app tags generated using large language models from the metadata provided in App Store Connect.
Updated
What this means
The tags come from your metadata, not from a field you fill in. There is no "tags" box in App Store Connect. What you write in the app name, subtitle, description and other fields is the input, and the model derives the tags.
What Apple does not say
Apple does not publish the list of possible tags, the model's rules or whether tags affect ranking. Apple's documented ranking factors remain text relevance (title, subtitle, keywords, primary category) and user behavior. Treat any article that claims tags change ranking as unverified.
What to do
- Write clear, honest metadata. A model summarizing vague or stuffed text produces vague results. See keyword stuffing.
- Make sure the app description states the main use cases in plain words.
- Search for your target phrases in the relevant storefront and note any tags shown next to your app.
- After a metadata update, check whether the tags change.
Example
A hypothetical habit tracker whose description only says "the best app for you" gives a model little to work with. One that says "track daily habits, build streaks and get reminders" names concrete uses.
Common mistakes
- Chasing a tag instead of describing the app.
- Treating a tag you saw once as stable. It may change.
