Keyword stuffing (App Store)

Keyword stuffing is filling app metadata with repeated, irrelevant or misleading terms to match more searches. Apple's App Review Guideline 2.3.7 tells developers not to pack metadata with trademarked terms, popular app names, pricing information or other irrelevant phrases.

Updated

What Apple says, by field

  • Name and subtitle: choose a unique name; the subtitle must follow the same metadata rules. See app name and subtitle.
  • Keywords: prohibited content includes unauthorized trademarked terms or celebrity names, irrelevant terms and competing app names. Apple may modify inappropriate keywords at any time or take other steps to prevent abuse. See the keyword field.
  • Description: Apple advises against adding unnecessary keywords to the description to improve search results.
  • Special characters do not carry extra weight when users search.

Stuffing is not the same as packing

Apple wants you to use the 100 bytes well: avoid plurals of words already included, generic terms like "app", and filler words. That is efficient, not stuffing. Stuffing means terms that do not describe the app, or the same words spread across fields to chase ranking.

Example

Hypothetical habit tracker, name field:

  • Stuffed: Streakly - Habit Tracker Goals Planner Routine Diary Fitness Todo
  • Clean: Streakly: Habit Tracker

The second is 23 characters and readable. The extra words belong in the subtitle and keyword field, where they sit once.

Why it backfires

A listing that reads like a list converts worse, because people judge the text, and it risks a rejection or Apple changing your keywords. See conversion rate.

How to avoid it

  1. List only terms that truly describe your app.
  2. Place each word once, using the cannibalization checker.
  3. Keep the name readable aloud.
  4. Never add competitor or celebrity names; see branded keywords.

Violations are covered under metadata rejection and the App Review Guidelines.
