Keyword ranking (App Store)

A keyword ranking is the position of your app in the App Store search results for one search term in one country. Rank 1 is the top result. A ranking is meaningless without the term and the storefront it belongs to.

Updated

The three parts

  1. Term. "habit tracker" and "habit tracker app" can give different results.
  2. Country. Each storefront has its own results.
  3. Language. Apple states that users can search with localized keywords in all countries or regions where a localization is shown, so the same app can rank for a local-language term only if that localization exists.

How it is measured

Tools run the search and read the position of your app in the list, for example through the public iTunes Search API with a country parameter. LocalASO shows rank as #1 to #200, or 200+ when the app is outside the top 200, in a grid of keywords by country.

What moves it

Apple states results are based on text relevance and user behavior. You influence the first through metadata and the second through the page, ratings and downloads. Changes to metadata may take up to 24 hours to appear.

Example

A hypothetical habit tracker ranks #14 for "daily planner" in the United States and #3 in Canada. The term is the same, but the top 10 and the competition differ, so each rank needs its own plan. The ranking by country guide covers this.

Limits

A rank read by a tool is a snapshot. Apple does not document whether results differ per user, so compare readings taken the same way and over time with rank tracking.

Next step

Aim for the top 10 on terms that matter and use keyword difficulty to pick them.

Variants of one word are covered under singular and plural keywords.
