Rank tracking (App Store)
Rank tracking means recording your app's keyword rankings repeatedly, per term and per country, so you can see whether your work moves them. One reading is a snapshot; a series is evidence.
Updated
What to track
- Your 20 to 50 main keywords in your biggest storefronts.
- A few control keywords you do not touch, so you can tell your change from a general shift.
- Your main competitors on the same terms. See competitor tracking.
How often
Apple states that after you update app information it may take up to 24 hours for the change to appear. Checking more often than daily after a metadata update adds noise. Apple also limits the iTunes Search API to approximately 20 calls per minute, subject to change, and recommends caching, so a tracker has to be economical with requests.
Example
A hypothetical habit tracker moves "planner" from the keyword field to the subtitle. It records daily ranks for "planner" and two untouched control terms for two weeks. If "planner" rises by six places and the controls stay flat, the change likely helped. If all three rise, something broader happened.
Common mistakes
- Judging a change after one day.
- Changing several fields at once, which hides the cause.
- Tracking only the country you live in.
In LocalASO
LocalASO stores daily rank history locally on your Mac and shows it as a small chart next to each keyword, so your data stays on your machine.
Next step
Set baselines using the keyword research guide and see how the board works in the LocalASO docs.
