Localization (App Store)

App Store localization means adding metadata in another language for your app, so people can find it with their own search terms and understand the page. It is more than translation: the keywords have to be right for that language.

Updated

What can be localized

The app name, subtitle, keywords, description, promotional text, What's New, support and marketing URLs, and screenshots and previews can all be set per language. The App Store Connect API puts name, subtitle and privacy fields under app-info localizations and the rest under version localizations.

Apple's rules

  • App Store Connect supports 50 metadata languages, called locales.
  • Users can search with localized keywords in all countries or regions where the localization is shown.
  • When you add a language, screenshots and properties default to the primary language's, except the description and keywords.
  • You can manage languages only when the app status is editable.
  • If no localization matches a user's language, the next most relevant one is used.

Example

A hypothetical habit tracker has the English keyword "routine". A German listing should not carry the English word; people in Germany search with terms like "Gewohnheiten" or "Tagesplaner". Writing those terms into the German keyword field is localization. Translating "Daily routines that stick" word for word is only translation.

Common mistakes

  • Translating the English keyword list literally.
  • Adding a language but leaving the English screenshots.
  • Ignoring regional variants. Portuguese for Brazil and Portugal use different locale codes.

Fallback behavior is covered under localization fallback, and the default language under primary language.

Quality of drafts is discussed under machine translation and transcreation.
