Keyword swap (ASO)

A keyword swap means replacing one keyword in your metadata with a better one. In LocalASO the Swap verdict marks the clearest case: you rank in the top 10 for a term, but almost nobody searches it. The ranking exists, but it brings no traffic.

Updated

Why swap

Metadata space is limited. The keyword field holds 100 bytes. A top-10 position for a term with no searchers feels good and delivers nothing, so the bytes work harder somewhere else.

Steps

  1. Find terms with the Swap verdict, or a dead keyword.
  2. List replacement candidates from your keyword gap work.
  3. Choose one with higher search volume and acceptable keyword difficulty.
  4. Replace it, keeping commas and no spaces.
  5. Wait for the update, which may take up to 24 hours to appear, and re-check ranks.

Example

A hypothetical habit tracker has habit, routine, streaks, habitual, planner (the habitual entry is 8 bytes plus a comma). It ranks #6 for "habitual" and the volume estimate is near zero. Swapping it for journal (7 bytes plus a comma) keeps the field inside its budget:

Before: habit,routine,streaks,habitual,planner = 38 bytes After: habit,routine,streaks,journal,planner = 37 bytes

The replacement should still describe the app. Irrelevant terms are not allowed.

What to watch

  • LocalASO's volume is an estimate from rating counts and not an Apple count. Confirm a swap on terms where the estimate surprises you.
  • Do a metadata update in one locale first if you want a clean comparison.
  • Do not remove a term that lives in the name or subtitle. Those fields carry other jobs.
