ASO glossary
Keyword gap (ASO)
A keyword gap is a relevant keyword where competing apps rank well and your app does not. Finding gaps is a fast way to discover search terms you have overlooked.
Updated
Two kinds
- Coverage gap. The term is not in any of your fields. You are invisible for it.
- Rank gap. The term is in your listing, but you rank outside the top 10 and rivals sit inside it.
Coverage gaps need a metadata change. Rank gaps usually need a stronger field, better conversion or a different term.
How to find them
- Choose three to five competitors in your category. See competitor tracking.
- Collect the terms for which they rank in the top 10.
- Remove competitor brand names, which Apple does not allow in your keyword list, and terms that do not describe your app.
- Check search volume and keyword difficulty in each storefront.
Example
A hypothetical habit tracker compares itself with a rival:
| Term | Rival rank | Your rank | Type | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| morning routine | 3 | not in top 200 | coverage | add to keywords |
| habit tracker | 2 | 18 | rank | test name placement |
| the rival's brand | 1 | - | brand | ignore |
Limits
Gaps built from rating counts and ranks are estimates. A term a rival ranks for may not suit your app. LocalASO estimates volume and difficulty from rating counts, not Apple search counts, and it checks 52 storefronts.
In LocalASO
LocalASO suggests keywords to add, remove or swap, quick wins, positions to protect and markets you do not cover yet, each with a reason. See quick-win keywords.

To replace weak terms with gap terms, use a keyword swap.
