ASO glossary

Model Context Protocol (MCP)

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI applications connect to external tools and data in a consistent way. An MCP server publishes a list of tools, and an AI client can call them during a conversation.

Updated

What it means for ASO

Without MCP, you copy keyword data into a chat window by hand. With an MCP server, your AI tool reads the data directly. LocalASO includes an MCP server so your own AI tools can read the keyword board, add and check keywords, see competitors and read the saved listing.

The five tools

ToolPurpose
board_getRead the keyword board
board_add_keywordsAdd keywords to the board
keywords_checkCheck keywords
competitors_getApps ranking ahead of yours, with ahead count and review count
listing_getRead the saved listing

Details are in the MCP docs.

Example prompts

  • "Which keywords have a Push verdict in the United States? Who is ahead of me for them?"
  • "Add these ten keywords to my board and check them in Germany."

The first uses board_get and competitors_get. The second uses board_add_keywords and keywords_check.

What the data is

Volume and difficulty returned by the tools are 0 to 100 estimates derived from rating counts, not Apple search counts. The data lives in a database on your Mac. See search volume.

What it does not do

The tools read and add keywords. They do not submit your app for review; LocalASO can upload listing text as a draft to App Store Connect and never submits.

Your AI, your choice

LocalASO uses the AI you bring (Claude Code, an Anthropic API key, Ollama, Codex or Gemini CLI). See AI keyword suggestions.
