Competitor tracking (ASO)

Competitor tracking is the habit of following rival apps' keyword rankings and listings over time. It tells you who sits ahead of you for each term and when that changes.

Updated

What to track

  1. Their rank for your main keywords in each storefront.
  2. Which apps rank ahead of you, and by how many positions.
  3. Their rating counts, which drive keyword difficulty.
  4. Changes in their name and subtitle after a metadata update.
  5. New competitors that appear in the top 10.

Not worth the effort: copying their exact keyword lists, and chasing their brand terms.

What Apple allows

Names of other apps or companies are not allowed in your keyword list, and Apple's prohibited content includes competing app names. Tracking is research; you may not turn it into keywords of their brands. See competitor keywords.

Example

A hypothetical habit tracker adds three rivals. After two weeks it sees that one rival moved from #5 to #2 for "habit streak" after changing its subtitle. That tells the team where the competition is investing, and a keyword gap check shows which of the rival's other terms the team does not cover.

In LocalASO

You can add any app as a competitor and see where it ranks for your keywords. A "Losing to" list shows the apps ranked ahead of yours with their rating counts. Daily rank history stays in a database on your Mac. The competitors_get MCP tool returns the apps ranking ahead of yours, with ahead count and review count, so your own AI tools can read it.

Next step

See how to add a competitor in the add app docs and how rank tracking works.

Use the iTunes Lookup API to read a rival's listing by ID.
