Norwegian App Store Localization: Storefronts and Keyword Bytes
Norwegian is the additional language of Norway in Apple's localizations table, where English (U.K.) is the default. It is not a default anywhere, and Apple's locale shortcode for it is plain no.
Updated
Norway starts from English
The Norway row lists English (U.K.) first and Norwegian second. If your app has no Norwegian listing, Apple's fallback logic applies: the next most relevant localization is used. Adding the no locale gives Norway a listing of its own. Compare the same pattern in Danish and Finnish, and the contrasting Swedish default on Swedish.
Check the storefront on the Norway keyword page. Apple's list has a single Norwegian entry, not separate Bokmål and Nynorsk locales, so one field serves both written standards.
Norwegian storefronts in Apple's table
- Default language in none: Apple's table never makes Norwegian the default.
- Additional language in 1: Norway.
Where Norwegian is an additional language, the default beside it is English (U.K.).
Norwegian keywords and the 100-byte limit
Apple's keyword reference allows 100 bytes, not 100 characters. Counted as UTF-8, the example below contains 54 one-byte and 2 two-byte characters (separators excluded). Only the accented letters cost two bytes, so the field holds between 50 and 100 letters depending on how many accents you use. The words below are a hypothetical keyword list for a habit tracker called Streakly; they are illustrations, not validated search terms, and each has at least three characters.
| Keyword | Meaning | Characters | Bytes |
|---|---|---|---|
| vaner | habits | 5 | 5 |
| rutine | routine | 6 | 6 |
| mål | goals | 3 | 4 |
| påminnelse | reminder | 10 | 11 |
| motivasjon | motivation | 10 | 10 |
| dagsplanlegger | day planner | 14 | 14 |
| disiplin | discipline | 8 | 8 |
Joined with commas and no spaces after them, the field is:
vaner,rutine,mål,påminnelse,motivasjon,dagsplanlegger,disiplin
That is 62 characters and 64 bytes: 58 bytes of keywords plus 6 commas, leaving 36 of the 100 bytes free. The byte counts assume UTF-8; confirm the final count in App Store Connect before you save.
Norwegian and Danish keywords overlap, but the fields do not
Norwegian and Danish share many words. Norway's field cannot borrow the Danish storefront's field, because they are different locales and different storefronts. A word that appears in both languages still has to be entered in each.
The cost is small in bytes: Norwegian adds å, æ and ø, two bytes each, and the rest is ASCII. The example field spends one extra byte for each of å in mål and påminnelse. Apple does not document how a keyword with æ, ø or å is matched against a search typed with a plain a or o, so test it.
What to do next
LocalASO checks keywords in 52 App Store storefronts, each in the storefront's local language, so you can compare your Norwegian candidates with the English ones in one place. Keywords, ranks and listings stay in a database on your Mac. LocalASO is a one-time $29 purchase and the app needs a license key to run; the setup is in the localization docs and the price is on the pricing page. To test the field you just built, use the keyword field checker, or browse every language page. See also: Swedish, Danish, Finnish, English (U.K.).
