App Store Localization for Turkish: Storefronts, Bytes, Keywords
Turkish is an additional language in two storefronts in Apple's localizations table: Cyprus and Türkiye. It is the default in neither, and both rows have English (U.K.) as the default.
Updated
Where Apple lists Turkish
Apple's localizations table never names Turkish as a default language. It appears as an additional language in 2 more: Cyprus and Türkiye. The default language listed next to it is English (U.K.) in 2.
A worked Turkish keyword field
Apple's keyword reference allows 100 bytes, not 100 characters. Counted as UTF-8, the example below contains 55 one-byte and 8 two-byte characters (separators excluded). Only the accented letters cost two bytes, so the field holds between 50 and 100 letters depending on how many accents you use. The words below are a hypothetical keyword list for a habit tracker called Streakly; they are illustrations, not validated search terms, and each has at least three characters.
| Keyword | Meaning | Characters | Bytes |
|---|---|---|---|
| alışkanlık | habit | 10 | 13 |
| rutin | routine | 5 | 5 |
| hedefler | goals | 8 | 8 |
| hatırlatıcı | reminder | 11 | 14 |
| motivasyon | motivation | 10 | 10 |
| günlük plan | daily plan | 11 | 13 |
| disiplin | discipline | 8 | 8 |
Joined with commas and no spaces after them, the field is:
alışkanlık,rutin,hedefler,hatırlatıcı,motivasyon,günlük plan,disiplin
That is 69 characters and 77 bytes: 71 bytes of keywords plus 6 commas, leaving 23 of the 100 bytes free. The byte counts assume UTF-8; confirm the final count in App Store Connect before you save.
Türkiye and Cyprus
In Türkiye the default is English (U.K.) with Turkish as the only additional language. Cyprus lists English (U.K.) as the default and Greek and Turkish as additional languages, which makes it a two-local-language storefront; see Greek. LocalASO covers Türkiye on its Turkey keyword page.
As with Arabic, adding the Turkish locale is an addition to an English default, not a swap.
The dotted and dotless i
Turkish uses both i and ı, and İ and I. The dotless ı and the capital İ take two bytes each, while the plain i takes one, so a word like alışkanlık costs more than its length. The letters ş, ğ, ç, ö and ü also take two bytes each.
Apple does not document how case or the dotted and dotless i are treated in search. Spend bytes on the form that people type, and check the storefront results for both. The field budget is otherwise like other Latin languages: commas with no spaces after them, and three characters or more per keyword.
Check it in LocalASO
LocalASO checks keywords in 52 App Store storefronts, each in the storefront's local language, so you can compare your Turkish candidates with the English ones in one place. Keywords, ranks and listings stay in a database on your Mac. LocalASO is a one-time $29 purchase and the app needs a license key to run; the setup is in the localization docs and the price is on the pricing page. To test the field you just built, use the keyword field checker, or browse every language page. Related languages: Greek, Arabic, Hebrew.
