Ukrainian App Store Localization: Storefronts and Keyword Bytes

Ukrainian is an additional language in two storefronts in Apple's localizations table: Russia and Ukraine. It is the default in neither, so a Ukrainian listing is always an addition.

Updated

Not only Ukraine

Ukraine lists English (U.K.) as the default and Russian and Ukrainian as additional languages. Russia lists Russian as the default with English (U.K.) and Ukrainian as additional languages. So the uk locale reaches Ukrainian speakers in two storefronts on paper.

That is what the table says, not a promise of reach: Apple's search example is about French. See the Ukraine keyword page. LocalASO has no country page for Russia.

Ukrainian storefronts in Apple's table

  • Default language in none: Apple's table never makes Ukrainian the default.
  • Additional language in 2: Russia and Ukraine.

Where Ukrainian is an additional language, the default beside it is Russian in one and English (U.K.) in one.

A worked Ukrainian keyword field

Apple's keyword reference allows 100 bytes, not 100 characters. Counted as UTF-8, the example below contains 1 one-byte and 42 two-byte characters (separators excluded). At two bytes a letter the field holds at most 50 letters of keywords, commas included. The words below are a hypothetical keyword list for a habit tracker called Streakly; they are illustrations, not validated search terms, and each has at least three characters.

KeywordMeaningCharactersBytes
звичкиhabits612
трекер звичокhabit tracker1325
ціліgoals48
нагадуванняreminders1122
мотиваціяmotivation918

Joined with commas and no spaces after them, the field is:

звички,трекер звичок,цілі,нагадування,мотивація

That is 47 characters and 89 bytes: 85 bytes of keywords plus 4 commas, leaving 11 of the 100 bytes free. The byte counts assume UTF-8; confirm the final count in App Store Connect before you save.

Ukrainian spelling in the keyword field

Ukrainian and Russian share the Cyrillic script but not all letters: і, ї and є are Ukrainian, while ы and э are Russian. Each takes two bytes. A list written in Russian will not substitute for a Ukrainian one, even when the words look close.

Apple does not document whether search treats Russian and Ukrainian keywords as interchangeable, so write the Ukrainian list in Ukrainian and check it in the Ukraine storefront. The byte cost is the same as for Greek and Russian: two per letter.

Check it in LocalASO

LocalASO checks keywords in 52 App Store storefronts, each in the storefront's local language, so you can compare your Ukrainian candidates with the English ones in one place. Keywords, ranks and listings stay in a database on your Mac. LocalASO is a one-time $29 purchase and the app needs a license key to run; the setup is in the localization docs and the price is on the pricing page. To test the field you just built, use the keyword field checker, or browse every language page. See also: Russian, Greek, English (U.K.).
