Use case
ASO for side-project apps: the smallest useful routine
If your app is a side project, run ASO in three short sessions: research, one listing update and one check a week later. LocalASO does the rank checks in the background, so your evening time goes to decisions rather than waiting.
Updated
Who this is for
You have a job, a family or both, and you ship an app in the hours left. You want results from small, finished steps rather than from an optimization program.
The problems you probably have
- No sustained time. A tool that needs daily attention gets dropped.
- Overthinking. Fifty keywords in fifty countries is more than you will ever act on.
- Changes that need a release. You cannot ship every week.
- Not knowing whether it worked. Without a baseline you cannot tell.
The three sessions
Session one, about an hour: baseline and research.
- Add your app and two or three competitors.
- Let the first rank checks run. A sweep of 15 keywords in 30 countries takes about 15 to 20 minutes, so keep it small at first: your home market plus five.
- Read the board and write down the Push keywords, where you rank 4 to 20 with difficulty below 80.
Session two, about an hour: one change.
- In Optimize, pick the Max reach strategy for your main language only.
- Check the result in the keyword field checker: the field accepts up to 100 bytes.
- Export to file and paste into App Store Connect. Metadata changes appear on the store within about 24 hours of an update.
- Promotional text, up to 170 characters, can be changed at any time without a new version, so use it for small updates between releases.
Session three, 30 minutes, a week later: check.
- Open the board and compare ranks with the baseline. The keyword research guide explains how to read small moves.
- Keep one change, revert one, plan the next.
What this routine skips on purpose
- Localization beyond one or two languages. Add them later using the localization guide.
- Creative testing and paid ads.
- Deep competitor tracking.
What LocalASO cannot do for a side project
- No Google Play. Mac app, Apple App Store only.
- No automatic submission. You press the buttons in App Store Connect.
- No exact search counts. The numbers are estimates.
- No refunds. The download is free, but the app needs a license key to run, so read the docs before paying the one-time $29.
Keeping it going
Put a recurring reminder every release, not every week. Before each release ask three questions: is any keyword Dead, is any Push keyword within reach of a text change, and did a rival appear. If the answer is no to all three, ship without touching the listing. A routine that sometimes does nothing is easier to keep than one that always demands work.
