Use case

ASO for utility apps: winning specific searches against generic ones

A utility app, such as a unit converter, a PDF scanner or a QR reader, wins searches by naming the exact task. Short generic words are held by apps with very large rating counts, so LocalASO will usually mark them Hard, while a specific task phrase in a local language often has a weaker top 10.

Who this is for

You ship a focused tool that solves one chore. People search for the chore, not for your brand, and many of them never see anything below the first screen of results.

The problems you probably have

  • Generic head terms. Difficulty combines the median and mean log rating counts of the top 10 with the share of apps with at least 50,000 ratings, so one-word terms in utility categories tend to score high.
  • A small keyword budget. The field takes up to 100 bytes, comma-separated with no spaces between terms.
  • Plurals and filler. Apple advises avoiding plurals of words already included and generic terms like "app" in the field.
  • One-language listing. A tool that works the same everywhere often has text in one language only.

A workflow for a utility app

  1. Add your app and the three or four best-known apps for the same task as Competitor.
  2. Open the board and look at the Losing to list for your keywords. If the apps ahead of you have tens of thousands of ratings, the keyword is Hard; look for a variant that names the task more precisely.
  3. Use Brainstorm with one sentence about the task, then keep the phrases where demand holds and difficulty is below 80.
  4. Run localization. The AI adapts each keyword into what people in that country type, and LocalASO checks the local phrase in the local store, so you see the rank local users see.
  5. Fit the result into the field with the keyword field packer and verify the byte count with the keyword field checker.
  6. Write it down: for each change keep the old phrase, the new phrase and the date, so you can tell which edit moved the rank.

The keyword field guide lists what Apple says to leave out.

What LocalASO does not do for a utility app

  • It does not tell you the true search count for a task phrase. Apple does not publish one, and the 0 to 100 volume is an estimate from rating counts.
  • It does not replace an icon and screenshots. Utility apps are chosen in seconds, and visuals live in App Store Connect.
  • No Google Play and no web access. Mac app, Apple App Store only.
  • No usage analytics. Retention and feature use stay in your own tools.

Next step

Choose the five tasks your app actually does and check each in your main storefront. Download LocalASO or read pricing. Next in this series: entering the Japanese App Store and the German store.
