Quick answer
App Review Notes Character Limit
The App Review Notes field can contain up to 4,000 bytes, and Apple states it is bytes, not characters. Customers cannot see the field.

Bytes in practice
Plain English text uses one byte per character, so a note of up to about 4,000 characters fits. Non-Latin text uses more: at three bytes per Japanese character, 4,000 bytes hold about 1,333 characters. Apple does not document the encoding, so count UTF-8 bytes to be safe. The same bytes-not-characters wording applies to the keyword field.
What belongs in notes
- Demo account credentials if sign-in is required.
- Steps to reach features that are hard to find.
- Hardware, region or account conditions needed to test.
- Explanations for anything a reviewer could misread.
What does not belong: marketing copy. Public text goes in the fields customers see, such as the description. Separate from notes, App Store Connect also requires a Support URL leading to real contact information, and a Privacy Policy URL for iOS and macOS apps.
Worked example
A hypothetical habit tracker writes: "Demo login: demo@example.com / use the in-app Sign in with email. To see streak widgets, add a habit, then long-press the Home Screen." That is 134 bytes, about 3.4 percent of the 4,000. A bilingual note with a Japanese paragraph of 500 characters would add 1,500 bytes.
Next step
If you draft the note with the other fields, see the App Store Connect docs for how LocalASO uploads listing text as a draft, and keep the metadata limits reference at hand. The shortest keyword rule is the minimum keyword length.
Questions
- Can customers read the review notes?
- No. Apple states the field is not visible to customers.
- Is the description limit the same?
- The description is limited to 4,000 characters, while review notes are limited to 4,000 bytes. The numbers match but the units differ.
