App version (App Store Connect)

An app version is one release of your app in App Store Connect: a build, a version number and the version-level metadata that goes with it. A new version is what you submit to App Review when you ship an update.

App-level and version-level fields

Apple splits the data. Name and subtitle live under App Information, which is shared across platforms, and are localized per language. Version-specific fields are the description, keywords, promotional text, support and marketing URLs and What's New. In the App Store Connect API these are the app-info localization and the version localization.

What waits for a version

  • Changing the app icon after publishing requires a new version submitted for review.
  • Apple's product page guidance describes updating the description and subtitle when you submit a new version.
  • The name can be edited until submission; afterwards, it can be changed with a new version.

What does not

Apple states that promotional text can be updated at any time without submitting a new version. Apple's documentation we checked does not make that statement for other fields, so assume a new submission unless you have confirmed otherwise.

Example

A hypothetical team ships version 2.4 with a new widget. In the same submission they update What's New, adjust the keyword field and swap two screenshots. After approval, they refresh the promotional text without a new build.

Next step

Plan metadata changes around releases using the metadata limits reference and check the update delay under metadata update.

Submissions are checked in App Review; privacy answers can change without a version, see app privacy details.
