Conversion rate (App Store)

Conversion rate is the share of people who take the next step after seeing your app. Apple's App Analytics defines it as the ratio of total downloads to unique impressions, where unique impressions are the people who view your app icon on the App Store in a given day. Apple's example: 100 unique impressions and 50 total downloads give a conversion rate of 50%. Teams also use a second, narrower version, product page views to downloads, which you compute yourself.

Why it matters

Apple states that search results are based on text relevance and on user behavior, which includes downloads, ratings and reviews. Better conversion means more downloads from the same traffic. Apple does not publish a formula linking conversion to rank, so treat any such claim as unverified. The safe statement is that conversion adds downloads without needing new keywords.

Worked example

These numbers are hypothetical. A habit tracker gets 10,000 impressions, 1,500 product page views and 300 downloads.

  • Impression to view: 1,500 / 10,000 = 15%.
  • View to download: 300 / 1,500 = 20%.

If a better set of screenshots lifts view-to-download from 20% to 24%, the same 1,500 views produce 360 downloads.

What moves each rate

StepMain elements
Impression to viewApp name, subtitle, icon, first screenshots shown in search results, rating
View to downloadScreenshots, app preview, description, ratings

Search results can show the rating and up to three screenshots or previews, so the images and rating work before anyone opens your page.

What Apple reports

Apple states developers see a 2.5 percentage point conversion increase on average when referring people to a custom product page, versus a 1.6% average on default pages. This is Apple's average, not a promise.

How to test

Use product page optimization for the default page. Results appear in App Analytics after five first-time downloads are associated with the test, but that count is a display threshold, not a sample size that proves a result. Wait for enough traffic before deciding.

Next step

Open App Analytics in App Store Connect and compare conversion by country using the ranking by country guide.

Time-limited In-App Events are another way to bring visitors to the page. The wider discipline is explained under ASO.

Apple's own split testing is covered under A/B testing.

Results sit in App Analytics.
