Screenshots (App Store)

App Store screenshots are the images on your product page that show your app in use. They are uploaded per device size and per language, and the first few also appear in search results.

Updated

Apple's rules

  • Up to 10 screenshots per device size, at least one required, in .jpeg, .jpg or .png without alpha channels or transparency.
  • At least one for iPhone with Dynamic Island, and for iPad apps at least one for the iPad 13-inch display. Other sizes can be scaled from the highest required resolution.
  • Mac screenshots must be 16:10 and one of 1280x800, 1440x900, 2560x1600 or 2880x1800 pixels.
  • Guideline 2.3.3: screenshots should show the app in use, not only title art, a login page or a splash screen.

Why they matter

Search results can show the app rating and up to three screenshots or app previews. Depending on orientation, the first one to three screenshots appear in search when no preview is available. A visitor often judges your app from those images before reading anything, so they directly influence conversion rate.

Localization

When you add a language, screenshots and most properties default to the primary language's, except the description and keywords. That means a new localization quietly keeps English screenshots until you replace them. Replacing them with translated captions is one of the cheapest conversion tests you can run, and custom product pages let you vary them further.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the key message in screenshot four. Order them by importance.
  • Text too small to read in a search result.
  • Reusing marketing art that never shows the interface, which breaks the guideline above.

Next step

Test variants with product page optimization and review the field limits in the metadata limits reference.

Event cards from In-App Events show screenshots to people who do not have the app.

Mac listings follow separate size rules; see the Mac App Store. The icon is covered under app icon.

Rules for accuracy are in the App Review Guidelines.
